A lot of the hype of people selling solar to homeowners is the phrase sell solar energy back to the grid at a high price and buy it at a low price. What does that mean exactly? It got me wondering.
I have searched high and low and have gone through a lot of YouTube videos but honestly, the wrong video could give you the wrong impression. I had to explain it more to my customers so that it would make more sense especially with the misconceptions.
How Does Solar Panel System In the Home Work?
I always thought that as long as I have the solar on my roof I don't need the battery. It was only good for night time. I was wrong.
The solar panels system (photo-voltaic module) collects the sunlight and goes to the inverter which turns the energy into electricity. It then goes to the main panel and on to the Net Meter and then to the Grid. If you have a battery, your system will charge the battery first and once it is full, the electricity goes to the main panel and on to the Net Meter and then to the Grid.
Will I Have Electricity If There Is A Blackout?
The grid is like the outlet. If the main power is shut off and you don't have a battery, you will not have any electricity. The grid would be cut off due to safety reasons. If your battery has a charge, you will have electricity.
Some batteries are capable of you using 80% capacity and others need less than that to ensure the health and longevity of the battery. It is not advisable to completely drain it. The manual from the manufacturer will state which one is best for your battery.
Will I Really Get More Credit/Refund If I Sold High and Bought Low?
The selling high and buying low concept really is interesting. Do you schedule a time to do chores at home especially with work the next day? I have a hard time timing everything just right especially if I have my hands full with kids, pets, etc.
Also, it would be hard to time it if it was during the winter or rainy seasons if that was the case. It doesn't resonate with me nor is it practical. We want to get the solar to lessen the expenses and go green, not to develop a headache and have another mindful job that needs our utmost attention.
How Does Net Metering Work?
Energy your solar panel system creates Versus Your Usage would be the net. You just need to make sure that you are creating more energy than you are using.
Net Metering Statements are an annual occurrence. If your solar panel system was turned on on September, the balance is due by September of the next year.
Usually it is recommended that you have your Offset at more than 100% to account for changes that might happen in your life or for depreciation. It will also prevent the "True Up" Statement being a positive. Which means you owe the electric company money.
How Long Does the Battery Last?
It's funny how, if you ask someone who sells a generator, they will say a couple of hours at best. But if you ask a someone who sells solar, it can last as long as a week. Which one is right?
Honestly, it depends on your location and your usage. The battery has different capacities. Some are at 9.8kw and others are at 16kw. Some people use their power tools aside from their usual appliances which means you're using more electricity. Others are using the bare minimum which makes the battery last longer.
If you're in a state where the sun shines the brightest even on Winter season, it will definitely be a whole lot different over a state that only has sun during the Summer season.
If you were to drain the battery even overnight, the battery will be charged in full first prior to the electricity depositing to the grid. Which goes to say if you were in California, the battery will last as long as the sun keeps on shining.
The Bottom Line
Selling Solar Energy back grid is true since the energy is deposited into the grid once your solar energy system creates it. But if you buy the solar panels system of your home based on the sell high and buy low statement that some salesperson told you, it is not feasible.
Understanding what happens and how you can save more is the best way to ensure that you are winning with your shift to solar. It is due to people not understanding what they are getting into or people deceiving others that always brings out the worst in anything.
My goal is to help take that away by educating people on what things are and what options are available to them and Go Solar the Right Way.
